MELIS WAVES
Berlin-based songwriter Melis returns to the pages of TMR today with new single ‘Waves’. As well as exploring the emotions wrapped up in a love-hate relationship, the dreamy new song traces the artist’s roots back to Prague and her own complicated past with her home city. As Melis explains: “Waves is a very personal song about a love/hate relationship with someone. The lyrics came from my heart and I felt quite vulnerable during the writing process. It was born from a simple melody I played on a small keyboard in my bedroom. I realised that I felt the same way about my hometown Prague and I wanted to translate this feeling into the video.” Directed by Greta Stocklassa and filmed by Tomas Frkal, the collaborators made the decision to shoot the video on 16mm film exposing the rawness of the city and of the various storylines interwoven throughout. As with these visual stories, ‘Waves’ unfolds gradually, beginning with a mesmeric combination of soft piano and Melis’ aerial voice. As the track progresses, electronic beats, hand claps and shimmering synths join that simple melody to create an ever-more complex tapestry of life and movement, like the flowing veins of a metropolis. ‘Waves’ is the first taste of Melis’ second EP titled Undercurrent which is set to be released in the Spring of 2019. - Hannah Thacker
